Women In Science

February 11th, 2026 marks the 11th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS)—a meaningful milestone in the global movement toward gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Gender equality in science is essential to building a better future for all. Yet, women and girls continue to face persistent barriers and systemic bias when pursuing careers in scientific fields.

Closing the gender gap in science requires long-term commitment: challenging stereotypes, amplifying visible role models, supporting women’s advancement through targeted programmes, and fostering inclusive environments through policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Petronella McLoughlin and Dr Elzanne Jansen van Rensburg, both Board Members of HHT Ireland, have each pursued careers in science while living with HHT. Their stories reflect resilience, leadership, and the vital contribution of women in science.
